Oorleef Dance

Oorleef is a Cape Town dance and performance collective built around a simple but radical idea: that movement is a language for the things we don't know how to say out loud.

The group creates and performs work rooted in real experience — mental health, community, the stories that live in the body long after the events that put them there. They don't describe these themes from a distance. They move through them, together, on stage and in rehearsal rooms across a city that makes moving around it harder than it should be.

Getting Oorleef to a performance can mean a 6am bus from Belhar to reach a 9am rehearsal in town. It can mean navigating between Observatory and Khayelitsha in ways that are both time-consuming and genuinely unsafe. The group does it anyway — because what they are building together is worth the cost of getting there.

That gap between where Cape Town's creative opportunities are located and where its artists actually live is not incidental. It is one of the things Oorleef's work is quietly about. When you encounter them, you are encountering people who have already crossed the city to be there. That matters.

There are two ways to encounter Oorleef, and they offer very different things.

The first is to join them where the work happens — a rehearsal, a working session, the real process behind what eventually becomes performance. You watch, you might be invited in, you sit with the group afterwards and talk about what the work is and where it comes from. You leave having seen something that almost nobody outside the collective ever sees: the inside of how this kind of art gets made, and the conversation about mental health and community that lives at the centre of it.

The second is to travel with them. Meet Oorleef at a point in the city — wherever makes sense for where you're staying — and make the journey to their rehearsal space the way they make it. Minibus taxi, train, bus, on foot. The route is part of the story. By the time you arrive, you will understand something about mobility and access in Cape Town that no amount of explanation could give you.

Then you watch them work, and the contrast between the difficulty of getting there and the beauty of what happens once they arrive becomes something you carry with you.

Both encounters end the same way: a conversation with the group about what they do, why they do it, and what it actually means to keep a collective like this alive in a city like this one.
