Loopy

Michal 'Loopy' Luptak is the co-founder of Dlala Nje, a community-owned responsible tourism social enterprise that started in Johannesburg's inner city in 2012 and is now being rebuilt from scratch in Cape Town.

He is not from here. He wants to be clear about that.

He is a Johannesburg-bred, ex-chartered accountant who looked at the tourism industry, understood exactly how its economics work, and decided that the way value moves through it — away from communities and toward operators, platforms, and property — was a problem worth spending a career on. He is not an activist. He is not an academic. He is a founder who built a working model in one of the hardest cities in the world to build anything, and is now asking whether that model can travel.

Cape Town is the test. The frustration that brought him here is still alive. Over 10 million tourists move through South Africa every year. Cape Town absorbs a disproportionate share of them. The wealth that generates concentrates geographically, structurally, predictably. The people who carry the tourism economy — who cook, perform, commute, organise, teach, build — largely live far from where it profits. That is not an accident. It is a design failure. And design failures can be redesigned. That is what Dlala Nje is. A redesign.

This is not a walking tour. Loopy does not have a route.

What he has is a perspective. 14 years of building a responsible tourism model from the inside, a working theory of how community-owned experiences can redistribute value rather than extract it, and a live experiment in Cape Town that is in its infancy and already asking hard questions of everyone in the industry.
